Ethiopia, formerly called
Abyssinia, is one of the ancient countries in the world which
lying between 3-180 North and 33-480 East. Ethiopia shares
boundary on the northeast by Eritrea and Djibouti, on the east
and southeast by Somalia, on the south by Kenya and on the west
by Sudan. Ethiopian covers an area of 1,104,300km2, making it
the tenth largest country in Africa. The capital of Ethiopia is
Addis Ababa, which lies in the heart of the country at an
altitude of 2,300m. Ethiopia is Africa's third most populous
nation. The population of Ethiopia has above 78 million people.
Ethiopia is the oldest independent nation in Africa. It was home
to the powerful Christian kingdom of Axum in the first century’s
and became a Christian empire in the 15th century. Ethiopians is
one of the few countries in Africa, which has a written language
and a sophisticated culture based on a deep love of religion.
Ethiopia's Orthodox Church predates the Vatican and is one of
the oldest continuously Christian churches in the world. The
very first Muslims, facing persecution in Mecca, were granted
refuge in Ethiopia and established places of worship before
Islam triumphed in its birthplace in the Arabian Peninsula.
Ethiopia has a fascinating and rich history. Ethiopian legends
claim that the Axumite Kingdom dates back to when the Queen of
Sheba ruled the land, and that Ethiopia’s first king, Menelik I,
was the son of this queen and King Solomon of Israel. Legend has
it that Emperor Menelik I, the son of the Queen of Sheba and
king Solomon, brought the Ark of the Covenant from Jerusalem to
Axum, where he settled and established one of the world’s
longest known, uninterrupted monarchical dynasties. Once ruled
by the Queen of Sheba and rich in culture and legend, Ethiopia
is one of the oldest Christian countries in the world and
reputedly home to the Ark of the Covenant.

Ethiopia
is a multi-ethnic state. Four main language groups: Semitic,
Cushitic, Omotic, and Nilo-Saharan. It
is a nation of surprises, full of diversity and contrast, from
the ancient to the modern.
Ethiopia is the “Water tower” of
the Africa (the Blue Nile contributes to 85% of the main Nile
flow) and there is a great potential, which can be implemented
for the betterment of the country’s water resources both for
power generation as well as to boost agricultural production
through irrigation schemes.
Ethiopia is the origin of coffee
and it is from a region called Kaffa in the Southwest of
Ethiopia (locally its name is bunn or bunna) but
the present name coffee is dived from the name Kaffa.
Coffee
was contributed to the world by Ethiopia; the
history of coffee has been recorded as far back as the tenth
century. During that time, coffee remained largely confined to
Ethiopia where its native beans were first cultivated until
coffee beans were exported from Ethiopia to
Arabs.
Ethiopia has here own unique
ancient calendar. According to the beliefs of the Ethiopian
Orthodox Church, God created the world 5500 years before the
birth of Christ and it is 2000 years since Jesus was born. Based
on this timeline, we are in the year 7500 of the eighth
millennium.
Ethiopia Calendar, in which the
year is divided into 12 months of 30 days each, and a 13th month
of five days and six days during the leap year. The Ethiopian
Calendar is almost eight years behind the Gregorian calendar.

Endemic Mammals:
Ethiopia have about 1000 different types of animals where the
under listed are endemic mammals. Gelada baboon, Stark's hare,
Giant Molerat, Semien Fox. Menelik bushbuck, mountain Nyala,
Swain’s hartebeest & Walia ibex. There are unique futures and
divers of wild animals exist in Ethiopia. To state some of the
species which are found in the zoological museum of Addis Ababa.
52 species of rodents. 36 species of Bats. 20 species of
Ungulates, 22 species of Carnivores, 8 species of primates , 450
species of birds , 50 species of Snake , 35 species of Lizards ,
52 species of Amphibians (Frog and Toads), 52 species of Fish
and diverse collections of invertebrates (Lower Animals) .
Endemic Birds
Ethiopia is rich in type of bird diverse. There are about
24 endemic birds to name them: Ethiopia Blue-winged Goose,
hardwood's francolin, Rouget's rail, spot-breasted Plover,
white-collared pigeon, black-winged love bird, Yellow fronted
parrot, prince ruspoli's turaco, golden backed wood pecker,
Degoli lark, Sidamo long Clawed lark, white tail swallow,
Abyssinian Long claw, white-winged cliffchat, Ruppele's chat,
Abyssinian catbird, white-backed black tit, Yellow throarted
seed -eater, Ankober seed veater, Salvadorians seed- Easter,
Black-headed Siskin, white billed starling, Black-headed forest
oriole, strese Mann's bush crow, thick-billed raven. |
